Happy Older Americans Month!

May is “Older Americans Month”. Older Americans Month was established by President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens in 1963, and was then known as “Senior Citizens Month”. It was renamed in 1978, and is currently coordinated by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). This year’s theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute”. The site gives great examples of all three categories to help celebrate Older Americans Month. An idea of how to "Connect" is to encourage older adults to share experiences. “Create” can be accomplished by inspiring older adults to express themselves through art, dance or exercise. Finally, the ACL encourages you to “Contribute” by hosting a fundraising event to benefit local programs that serve older adults.

Older Americans have always been an important part of society, but as the aging population grows, their knowledge and experience has become vital. Visit the ACL website and check out the various resources to learn more about Older Americans, and how to help them continue to live their best life.
