As Green Bay Elder Law attorneys, we at Liebmann & Van Straten Legal Group, LLC fell that it is important for us to keep tabs on important changes in the law that could affect our Elder Law clients in Green Bay, the Fox Valley and throughout Wisconsin. In addition to changes in the law that relate to our Elder Law practice, we try to keep tabs on programs that might be available to Elder Law clients and their families, and tips to improve their lives. It’s helpful to us, and to our clients, for us to stay informed, and pass this information on so that we can share our expertise in Wisconsin Elder Law with you as we receive it.
Did you know that there is a federal funded program to pay people to keep aging members of their community company? Senior Corps has a program to pay volunteers who are 55 and older called “Senior Companions” to provide assistance and friendship to seniors who have difficulty with daily living. An article by NPR detailed the program in Maine and the success it has due to the rural nature of the state, and its rapidly rising aging population. The program is extremely popular in Maine. There are 600 people receiving the service and there is a waiting list of over 300 more. As with any program, there are budgetary restraints which prevent everyone that wants or needs the service from receiving it.
Ongoing, and meaningful companionship provided by Senior Companions can help our Green Bay Elder Law Clients remain independent for longer and keep a positive attitude. Additionally, Senior Companions can lighten the load on family caregivers, by giving them a break from their duties. To apply to volunteer, please contact your state’s Corporation for National & Community Service Office for more information.
