Can I Offer You A Drink?

At Liebmann & Van Straten Legal Group, LLC we are experts in Green Bay Elder Law. As part of our Elder Law practice, it is important for us to keep tabs on important changes in the law that could affect our Elder Law clients in Green Bay, the Fox Valley and throughout Wisconsin. In addition to changes in the law that relate to our Elder Law practice, academic institutions frequently release scientific studies related to dementia and other chronic diseases that affect our Elder Law clients. It’s helpful to us, and to our clients, for us to stay informed, and pass this information on so that we can share our expertise in Wisconsin Elder Law with you as we receive it.

According to an August 2018 HealthDay report “moderate” drinking may help prevent dementia. The study cited by HealthDay found a higher occurrence of dementia in people that do not drink, or those who drink too heavily. The study found that a group of people that drank one medium sized glass of wine, or one pint of beer a day fared better than non-drinkers or heavy drinkers.

Given Green Bay and the Fox Valley (and Wisconsin in general) have a strong culture of consuming alcohol, our Elder Law clients may find the results of the study good news. That said, Green Bay Elder Law clients should use caution before “taking up” drinking alcohol as a hobby, as doctors involved in the study cited by HealthDay stated several times “[n]o one is saying that if you don’t drink, you should start.” Nevertheless, those Green Bay Elder Law clients who do indulge in moderate alcohol consumption should be happy to know that they can continue to have a drink without increasing their chances of developing dementia.
